It was a fluke. As these things often are. I started a sketch, but it didn't go in the way I wanted it to. So at the last minute, I chose to enter the source photo instead. And it was accepted into the show! The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod's Winter Juried Show, with the title Bon Appetit. I titled the photo "The Dishes". It's write up is as follows.
The Dishes. A favorite childhood memory. My father in the kitchen with my Nana and Aunt Alma after a large holiday meal, doing the dishes with the women, at a time when most men were in the living room watching football. The original photograph was taken by my mother, Mary Schlichter. Likely a slide, in the early 1970’s (edited by me for this exhibit.) I can just imagine her standing at the door to the kitchen, saying “hey, look here” and Nana turning to her and responding with one word. “What?”
So this photograph represents, in a sense, a collaboration of my mother and father. Both gone now for years. I miss them both, every day.
