![]() I went to the movies this afternoon, because after the week I had, i just wanted to spend two hours in a dark theater and - laugh. I chose a movie about young actors trying to make it in improv. Promoted as a comedy. Trailer looked promising. But it was darker than anticipated. And full of deeper meaning. Great movie. Titled DON'T THINK TWICE. All fine and good but not what I was looking for. I just wanted to laugh. But it did get me thinking about something I heard a motivational speaker say once upon a time. That most motivational speakers were at heart frustrated wannabe stand up comics. They're not quite sure how to do that, so instead they tune into the motivational thing. And it works. And it can be life changing of a whole lot of people.. Been there. Tried that. Moved on to other things. Then there's the other one I consider a stand up comic shadow career with deeper purpose. Now, please don't get mad at me on this one, or take offense if it applies (or doesn't) to anyone you might know but I think there are a lot of preachers who also fall into this category (I just heard the room get REALLY quiet.) C'mon. Don't be so serious. Think about it. The preachers who have had the most impact on you also had a wonderful ability to bring at least or chuckle or two in the midst of the serious message. It softens you up. Makes you more open. Makes everyone feel a bit more - human. Been there. Tried that. Moved on to other things. Now, honestly, I wouldn't mind if my career path took me down either of those paths again. I love inspiring and motivating others. And I love the Lord so over the top beyond my wildest dreams these days that to offer that message to others would be a delightful and welcome gift in my life. But really - at age 56 - I also wonder - is there any opportunity in which I could try being a stand up comic, even just for one show? Because when it comes right down to it, if the laughter comes from a place of love and joy (and not the angry, harmful, judgmental type of comedy) then doesn't it also inspire? And what's wrong with the idea of more people spending more of their day simply laughing together? It's pretty darn hard to be hateful, angry, judgmental, divisive, unloving, depressed, or violent when you're enjoying a genuine lighthearted belly laugh. Could cure all sorts of ugly in the world. Go ahead. Force yourself to think of something really really REALLY funny - and observe how you feel. Just sayin... NIte nite. xo Mimi
