I'm allowing myself to "play" a little more in the gallery. Pick up a brush and an old painting and just dive in, without source photos or 'shoulds' because I figure if the painting has hung around this long then what the hey.
This evening I came across one by accident. I was tearing off a poster that had been on a stretched canvas, hung by the door announcing summer gallery hours. Time to take that one down. After I tore off that poster, I found another - "End of Year sale" from the end of 2015. Gone with that one, too. Then there was ANOTHER one. The one announcing the publication of Painting Lily back in June 2015. Tore THAT one off, too. And underneath, an unfinished painting. A portrait commissioned by someone that I just couldn't get right, of a cellist who died too young of M.S. Jacqueline du Pre was her name. I had only photos to work from, and the painting never "got there". (here is Jacqueline's OBIT if you care to know more.) So I put Jacqueline back on the easel, and just - played. Started by changing her dark dress to a bright sky blue. Then started doing that thing I rarely do - putting odd colors into unexpected places. Like blue in her hair, and on her skin. I rather like the new one. I don't expect to sell it. I just did it for fun. Found myself working through some mental demons while painting - which is one of the lovely benefits of creative pursuits. Time to let the mind wander. When it started to turn down a dark road, I prayed for light, and in it came. So, tonight I will sleep more peacefully for having done all of the above. Pretty cool stuff, eh? xo Me oh - and here is the before pic - and the after! pps - and a YOUTUBE LINK to some of her music - and this is kinda freaky - the first link I find of her she is wearing a - BLUE DRESS!!!
