A conversation with a friend earlier this week reminded me of an old Bill Cosby routine (ok - let's get this out of the way right up front - this is NOT a Bill Cosby commentary - please just keep reading). Those of us of a certain age (like me) will remember listening to it on vinyl, on a record player. Over, and over, and over again. (YOUTUBE LINK HERE if you want to re-listen, or have never heard it.)
Our conversation started on the topic of prayer. And listening for God to answer. And how sometimes when we hear or at least believe we hear God answer our prayer (another topic for another blog - discernment!) we often think, "yeah, right, that's ridiculous. Who? Me? You want me to do WHAT?!" Sometimes it feels like I'm being asked to do something beyond my ability, or sphere of influence. Sometimes it feels like I'm being tested. And sometimes - well, sometimes it just does NOT make sense. And that's when the Noah routine came to mind. God asking Noah to build an ark, and Noah responding, "yeah, right." Not sure exactly where to go with this at 10:32pm on Saturday evening, other than to consider how often God might be nudging us to do something that is a stretch - or pushes a comfort zone - or a confidence zone - and so we balk. I want to be open to hearing God's call for my life, large or small. It might be to impact a wider audience than I currently influence, and it might be to bring a smile, or a hug, to just one person in need. The discernment, well, that is up to each one of us. I believe in prayer, and believe God answers prayer. Not always how we want it, or when we want it, but in God's way. It's a journey. Let's keep working on it. xo Me.
